Japanese framed printsThe majority of our collection is dedicated to classical Japanese art, and from a period known as the ukiyo-e tradition in particular. Originating in the 1600s, ukiyo-e flourished in the late 18th and early-19th century, when some of the most famous works of Japanese art still recognisable around the world were produced.
Ukiyo-e artists worked in a number of different media - ink on silk and paper, watercolour paints, woodblock prints and calligraphy. The characteristics of the tradition include stylised representations, clear demarcations of shape and sharp colour contrasts, creating what strikes us today as a very modern, almost comic-book look. You could say ukiyo-e was the forerunner of modern Japanese Manga art!
Amongst the notable ukiyo-e artists whose work we stock, our collection of Japanese framed prints includes: Utagawa Hiroshige, ‘the last great master’ of the ukiyo-e tradition, renowned for his coastal landscape depictions. Katsushika Hokusai, best known for his woodblock print series 36 Views of Mount Fuji and for the world famous Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa. Kitagawa Utamaro, who produced an iconic series of female portraits known by the charming collective title ‘large-headed portraits of beautiful women.’
