Oriental Canvas Prints
You probably know more about classic oriental art than you think. Do these stunning female portraits from 18th Century Japan look familiar, for example? They are the revered ‘large-headed pictures of beautiful women’ by the artist Utamaro Kitagawa, now famous the world over.
Or what about this iconic stylised painting of a stormy sea? That is The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, by another Japanese painter, Katsushika Hokusai.
In fact, although the names of the artists and the images themselves might not be familiar, a large body of Japanese and Chinese art has become well-known in mainstream culture the world over.
Revered for its beauty, elegance, vivid use of colour and imaginative stylisation, oriental art of the classical period has justly transcended boundaries of geography and culture to be appreciated by art lovers everywhere.
Thanks to Arty Pie, you can add a flavour of the exotic east to your own home with our extensive oriental wall art canvas collection. We have close to 500 oriental prints on canvas available, covering the iconic Japanese ukiyo-e tradition, exquisite examples of Chinese art and a smattering of vintage oriental photography.
With subject matter ranging from temples to wildlife, geisha girls to samurai, there is an otherworldly, escapist quality to classic oriental art that will appeal to anyone seeking a different look and feel for their home. But the biggest appeal, as our fantastic collection of oriental wall art canvas demonstrates, is the quality and craftsmanship of these amazing images, which is right up there with some of the world’s greatest art.
A large proportion of our canvas oriental prints are taken from the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition, which flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ukiyo-e was a mixed medium artistic movement, with woodblock print, ink and paint the most common methods used.
Full of beautifully elegant women in elaborate colourful dress, samurai warriors and sumo wrestlers with comically exaggerated expressions, and amazing stylised depictions of landscapes and wildlife, ukiyo-e captures a Japan very different to the modern, urban, technologically advanced society it is today.
One fascinating feature of ukiyo-e art is the way that it involved communal creativity. The woodblock prints which which make up the majority of ukiyo-e works would involve at least four parties - the artists who designed the image, the woodcutter who carved the printing block, the artisan who hand pulped the paper, and the printer who inked and pressed the final piece.
In keeping with the artisanal traditions of ukiyo-e, all of our oriental canvas prints are hand-crafted using the best quality materials and techniques. Each canvas is treated to stop moisture getting into the weave and to protect against UV damage, which causes images to fade over time in sunlight.
We hand-stretch each canvas over a 30mm deep timber frame. In our reproduction techniques, we focus on recreating the colours and tones of the original as faithfully as possible, giving you the true taste of the orient you desire.
