Vintage Framed Prints
The concept of vintage art has developed a meaning of its own. It generally refers to commercial art produced from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Without a handy historical era to pin it to, and too diverse be contained by any single generic label, vintage has come to be used as a handy catch-all.
Like a fine wine from a particularly good vintage, Art Pie’s extensive collection of vintage framed prints are earthy, deep, complex and most definitely age well. From iconic images to intriguing curios, we have put together an eclectic catalogue of vintage art that will appeal to anyone who wants to add a little retro chic or a boho twist to their home.
With more than a thousand vintage framed prints for sale, our collection transports you to a world of bygone times, of army draft posters, gaudy theatre billboards and classic ads. You will also find gorgeous illustrations from the pages of antique encyclopedias and scientific text books, mainly focused on stunning animal studies and portraits.

Vintage art: A peak behind the scenes
Vintage art is described as ‘commercial art’ to differentiate it from so-called fine art. These were not works produced by budding great masters looking to earn themselves a exhibition in a gallery, nor were they produced with the aim of breaking new boundaries in style and form.
Vintage art was, by and large, the product of working artists who were commissioned to produce pieces for a purpose, for advertisements, displays, billboards and book illustrations. The names of most of the designers, draughtsmen, printers and illustrators behind them are forgotten, and only the quality of their work lives on.
Our catalogue features hundreds of framed vintage posters. Before the days of television and the internet, posters were an important means of public communication. Our collection includes dozens of vintage advertisements designed to be displayed as large posters in public places. You will probably recognise a few - the iconic Lord Kitchener and ‘Rosie the Riveter’ wartime posters have become legendary.
We also stock an extensive collection of framed vintage posters from the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Launched in Depression-era USA as part of the New Deal, the WPA funded all sorts of initiatives to get Americans back to work - including commissioning hard-up artists to produce theatre bills, public information announcements and much more.
